Dr. Christopher Raffo (M.D. from Georgetown in 1999), with offices in Bethesda and Germantown, practices sports medicine and orthopedics for adult and pediatric patients. My emphasis is on treating my patients in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible; normally this involves a myriad of non-operative modalities, such as medications, exercises and physical therapy, explains Dr. Raffo. Surgery is reserved for injuries that we know can’t get better with rehabilitation, or for cases that won’t get better. His group, Maryland Orthopedic Specialists, is partnered with physical therapy providers who also focus on healing active, motivated individuals.
Dr. Raffo is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. The separate board certification for Orthopedic Sports Medicine is only available to physicians who complete an advanced fellowship in Sports Medicine and have an appropriately focused sports medicine practice.
Dr. Raffo’s most common procedures are knee and shoulder arthroscopy. In the shoulder, all aspects of rotator cuff disease are treated with minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. The same is true for shoulder instability operations, which generally treat injuries to the labrum and associated conditions. The greatest advance is orthopedic surgery in the past 10-15 years, in my opinion, is the ability to treat rotator cuff tears without making more than a few quarter inch incisions, explains Dr. Raffo. The surgery is virtually painless with this technique; patients are less stiff and recover much faster.
Surgery in the knee usually involves the ligaments (such as the ACL), the meniscus, or the articular (surface) cartilage. The advances in knee surgery have revolved around doing the operations with less invasive fixation and smaller incisions. Along with that comes less pain and quicker recovery.
Dr. Raffo is active in the care of athletes. He is the head team physician for the Catholic University Cardinals and the Quince Orchard Cougars. Recent honors include being named Washingtonian Top Sports Medicine Provider in 2010 and Washington Post Super Doctor in 2011.
