It depends who you ask, but there is general agreement that joint supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM can reduce pain – though it’s hard to say by how much. Anyone with severe arthritis pain wants to believe there are medications or supplements that can help.

We tend to believe anecdotes from people we know, or from strangers who seem trustworthy. (I have taken these supplements and seen benefits -- when I quit taking them for 3 months, I felt lots more knee pain while jogging on a treadmill.) But these supplements are expensive, so it’s advisable to look for explicit evidence of their effectiveness: Specifically what works, and for who?

Resources on the possible benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements include reports from controlled clinical trials – where scientific evidence is systematically collected in an effort to determine whether the supplements really do make a difference. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) agency within the U.S. federal government sponsored an extensive study, known as the NIH Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT). They found that “For a subset of participants with moderate-to-severe pain, glucosamine combined with chondroitin sulfate provided statistically significant pain relief compared to placebo--about 79% had a 20% or greater reduction in pain versus about 54% for placebo. …[T]hese findings should be considered preliminary and need to be confirmed in further studies.” A link to the GAIT results is provided below.

Sites providing information about arthritis or orthopedic surgery are also helpful, such as those listed below. And webMD is helpful also.

Probably the worst thing about all this is that, if/when you do decide to take an expensive supplement, you can’t be sure you are getting what you pay for. Some manufacturers go through voluntary verification of the contents of their supplements. However, independent lab testing has shown that some supplements contain less than what is promised on the package labeling (and some, marketed for pets, have been found to contain virtually none of the promised substances). For example, the “Consumer Lab” site provides details on its testing of supplements with glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM; see link below.

Costco has a good supplement which helps but you mentioned "osteoarthritis" so to be sure you will want to do a private Dr consult first because those supplements may be ineffective for your situation. The Dexascan and other tests will prevail and direct your doctor into what you should be taking... for example Fosamax or others may or may not be right with the supplement, age, conditions, etc are all factors.

Talk with your doctor first.

FYI for some weblinks below- it's a wide area (osteoarthritis of the knee)

Hi, Jimi;

I've been using G/C supplements for almost a year now. You need to start with 1500/1200 mg daily for about a month, to build up a residual amount in your system. After that, back off to 1000/800 mg daily. I buy Spring Valley brand at Wal-Mart. A bottle of 60 500/400 mg tablets is about $ 10. It worked wonders on my arthritic ankle. Good luck!

Read the Best Seller"The Arthritis Cure", by Dr. George Theodasakis , or the Revised Edition , by Jason Theodasakis, M.D.
There's a website you might also try "Dr.Theo".
I don't know of a better product than glucosamine -chondroitin . There is a table in the first book , I mentioned , that tells you the proper dosage to buy .
If you shop around , you can get almost 200 pills for around $ 22.oo-vs- $ 30.00 for 30 pills at most drugs stores .

My friend, Last month I went to costco (superstore), and an old lady serving drinks came up to me and said, "Do you want to try Fish Oil," I gladly said yes since its a free sample. To make this short, the fish oil taste like crap, but it really helps your joints and muscles. give it a try.

There is little research that documents the use of chicken cartilage in the treatment of arthritis. How ever there are two highly regarded drugs that work great on knee joints. One is mentioned above, Synvisc. Synvisc is a synthetic version of the synovial fluid that is naturally in your joints. The other is hyaluronic acid which in the main substance in synovial fluid. It is injected into the joints as is synvisc but can also be taken as a supplement.

Both have dozens of major studies that show great results.

Cartilege is run down
Weak tendons
Inflammation

Many possibilities... you should obviously get it checked out. MD's won't say much as far as anatomy goes but they'll tell you to take ibuprofen, ice and heat pad regimens while keeping it elevated and rested.
I suggest to get a brace and see a physical therapist/knee specialist

Good Luck

I have ostio arthritis, spondolosis and curvature of the spine. Historically my pain subsided when I was on the move. Ten days ago I broke a toe consequently I took a homeopathic remedy which help enormously and my back pains have also gone.

Phone Ainsworths in London and ask for "Injury 200c" it will help with your joint pain.

Vitamin D has been found to relieve pain or to allow for less pain medication to get relief. Most diabetics are low in vitamin D and also vitamin B12. The recommended dose for vitamin D is 1,000 IU vitamin D3 per 35 pounds of body weight.

For vitamin B12, get methylcobalamin. The B12 sold in stores is cyanocobalamin and it doesn't work.

Glucosamine is classified by FDA as food supplement. It help somewhat in cartilage regeneration. But it is helpful in early stages of osteoarthritis only.
